Seminar on “Sino-US Relations and East Asian Security Environment” convened by JAFIE

On October 31st, 2023, the Yangtze River International Forum-2023 Seminar on ‘Sino-US Relations and East Asian Security Environment’” co-hosted by JAFIE and Global Forum of Chinese Political Scientists was successfully convened in Nanjing. More than ten renowned scholars in the field of international relations from the U.S., Japan, the Chinese Mainland, and Taiwan, China were invited to deliver keynote speeches and participate in discussions. The seminar was attended by over 90 people including Lin Xiangguo, Chairman of JAFIE, Zhao Quansheng, Professor of American University and Founder of Global Forum of Chinese Political Scientists, Senior Vice Chairman Teng Yong, Vice Chairman Si Jinquan, Vice Chairman Shao Weiming, as well as Executive Members, Members and Overseas Members of JAFIE, experts and scholars from Jiangsu Province and other provinces, entrepreneur representatives and elites from all walks of life.

Lin Xiangguo, Chairman of JAFIE delivered a speech.

In his speech, Chairman Lin Guoxiang stated that China and the U.S. are significant trade partners who have established extensive cooperation in the fields of economy, science and technology, and culture, and the cooperation between both sides is pivotal to the development of prosperity of the global economy. Stressing the importance of guaranteeing the regional peace and stability of East Asia, he pointed out that countries should solve disagreements via dialogue and negotiation, strengthen regional cooperation, and promote integration, so as to realize common development and prosperity.    

 

Zhao Quansheng, Professor of American University and Founder of the Global Forum of Chinese Political Scientists delivered a speech.

In his speech, Prof. Zhao Quansheng expressed his willingness as an Overseas Member of JAFIE to contribute to Jiangsus international exchanges. He emphasized the importance of personnel exchanges, academic exchanges, and humanistic exchanges between China and the U.S. to boost the friendship and exchanges between both sides. As an overseas Chinese, he felt delighted to contribute to the stabilization and further improvement of China-US relations.  

During the seminar, the scholars delivered insightful keynote speeches and carried out heated discussions. They analyzed the challenges and opportunities facing China-US relations and the security environment in East Asia. They suggested that we should strengthen exchanges and cooperation with each other to jointly confront challenges. Some constructive suggestions on how to deal with these challenges and strengthen cooperation were put forward.

 

Prof. Du Jin of Takushoku University served as the academic moderator for the third topic of the seminar, and delivered a keynote speech on Viewing Sino-US Trade War and Technology War from the Perspective of Japan  

 

Prof. Zhu Feng, Executive Member of JAFIE and Executive Dean of the School of International Studies, Nanjing University, served as the academic moderator for the second topic of the seminar, and delivered a keynote speech on How Can Sino-US Relations Remain Stable in the Era of Strategic Competition.

 

Prof. Zhong Yang of the University of Tennessee delivered a keynote speech on “Sino-U.S. Relations and Taiwan Question”.

 

Prof. Yuan Zheng, Vice President of the Institute of American Studies, CASS delivered a keynote speech on “Domestic Politics and the Biden Administration’s Policy towards China”.

 

Zhao Quashing, Professor of American University and Founder of the Global Forum of Chinese Political Scientists, served as the academic moderator for the first topic of the seminar, and delivered a keynote speech on “Sino-US Confrontation and East Asian International Relations”. 

 

Chen Qi, Deputy Director of the Center for International Security and Strategy, Tsinghua University delivered a keynote speech on “How to Control the Regional Effect of Sino-US Competition”. 

 

Prof. Liu Xing of Yamanashi Gakuin University delivered a keynote speech on “The Influence of Japan-US Alliance on China’s Surrounding Security Environment”.  

 

Associate Prof. Li Lingqun from the School of International Studies, Nanjing University delivered a keynote speech on “Sino-US Competition and Pan-security of Maritime Issues”.

 

Prof. Wu Chonghan of National Chengchi University delivered a keynote speech on Viewing Sino-US Relations from the Perspective of Taiwan.

 

Feng Liang, Deputy Director of the Collaborative Innovation Center of South China Sea Studies, Nanjing University, delivered a keynote speech on “Sino-US Strategic Confrontation and the South China Sea Issue”.

 

Prof. Wu Xuanxuan of Old Dominion University delivered a keynote speech on “Sino-US Taiwan Strait Confrontation and Its Impact on the Security of the Asia-Pacific Region”.

 

Assistant Prof. Zhou Wenxing from the School of International Studies, Nanjing University, delivered a keynote speech on “The Strategy and Direction of the Biden Administration to Build a Trilateral Security Mechanism between the U.S., Japan, and South Korea”.

 

During the interaction and exchange session, participants had in-depth discussions and exchanges on topics such as China-US relations and the security environment in East Asia. Their suggestions have contributed wisdom and strength to developing China-US relations and peace and stability in East Asia.

The success of the Yangtze River International Forum has not only provided a platform for exchanges and cooperation between China and the U.S., but also injected new impetus to peace and stability in East Asia, which is of great significance to promoting China-US relations and peace and stability in East Asia.
